This summer, we took 40 guests on our Costa Rica Origin Adventure trip. Imagine a journey through the lush jungles of Costa Rica, a land of tranquility, untouched beauty, extraordinary wildlife, and of course... coffee and cacao. As 40 travelers embarked on this Origin Adventure, they weren't just indulging in nature's beauty; they were embracing Costa Rica's biodiversity, culture, and the intricate journey of cacao and coffee production. Led by Chelsea and Jeff Abella, this journey introduced participants to the coffee and cocoa farmers who breathe life into Moka Origins' products. These trips were a window into the transparent, direct-trade supply chain, revealing the journey from raw beans to the final product.
Participants had the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the significance of ethically traded cacao. And the icing on the cake (or should we say, chocolate from the cacao pod?) was the chance to craft their own chocolate creations on a cacao farm. This trip seamlessly blended culinary science, nature, and culture, catering to all ages with activities like chocolate-making and coffee tree planting.
As the group ventured through Costa Rica's diverse landscape, they were introduced to various wildlife indigenous to the region. Sloths, birds, reptiles, and other captivating creatures graced their path. The adventure reached new heights as they soared through the treetops on ziplines and gracefully walked on hanging bridges.
After days of jungle exploration, relaxation was in order. The group found solace on the pristine beaches of one of the world's five blue zones. Snorkeling and kayaking to a remote island became the order of the day, allowing participants to embrace the stunning coastal beauty that surrounded them.
Highlights of the Journey:
- Rio Celeste Turquoise Waterfalls: The journey kicked off with a visit to the mesmerizing Rio Celeste, known for its turquoise waterfalls.
- Meeting our cacao partners: A highlight was introducing guests to the farmers behind our beans. We were able to visit Finca La Amistad, our Costa Rican farming partner, and tour their farm and even get our hands dirty by roasting cocoa. Connecting with the very source of their chocolate was a powerful experience, fostering a deep appreciation for the journey from tree to treat.
- Jungle Hanging Bridges and Sloth Tour: Walking on majestic hanging bridges amidst the lush canopy on the slopes of the Arenal Volcano was an exhilarating experience. Along the way, participants were treated to a special encounter with sloths, birds, and reptiles, offering a glimpse into the captivating wildlife of the region.
- Coffee Tree Planting and Tasting: The journey delved into the world of coffee as participants engaged in the entire process – from planting the trees to savoring the rich flavors. This hands-on experience connected them with the heart of Costa Rica's coffee culture.
Beyond adventure, there was ample time for unwinding, cultural immersion, and indulging in the local flavors. Comfortable accommodations were shared along with exceptional meals.
